Leaking Refrigerator in Indian Wells Causes Water Damage?

5/1/2023 (Permalink)

a photo of an empty freezer We respond to water damage emergencies 24 hours a day in the Coachella Valley

Refrigerators can cause water damage for a few reasons, and they don’t necessarily have to break down to do so. In my case, the ice in my freezer melted during a recent power outage and leaked underneath my unit, so the water leak was not apparent for a few days – enough time to seriously damage my hardwood floors. If we had noticed sooner, we would not have had such bad damage.

Fortunately, our insurance adjuster in Indian Wells told us to call the SERVPRO team in Coachella, and I’m glad we did. Their team arrived quickly, moved the refrigerator, pulled up the soggy flooring, and dried the damaged area completely. They also supervised the replacement of the damaged floor, subfloor, and baseboards underneath the refrigerator. Now, you would never know we had water damage in our kitchen!

Dangerous Black Water Contamination in Indio?

2/22/2023 (Permalink)

The lid of a sewer maintenance hole is shown. We clean and restore sewage spills in Coachella Valley.

Sewer water is grossly unsanitary and can carry infectious viruses and dangerous bacteria that can cause serious health problems. Fortunately, our Coachella Valley technicians are trained and certified to safely mitigate and restore sewer backups. We have the specialized equipment and protective clothing required to restore sewer damage, no matter how big the job is in Indio. Here are the three classifications of water contamination we remediate:

Category 1: "Clean Water"

This is water from a clean source, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet.

  • Water from a clean source, like a broken water line
  • If left untreated, it can degrade into categories two or three

Category 2: "Gray Water"

  • It May contain bacteria and viruses
  • It can quickly degrade into category three if left untreated

Category 3: "Black Water"

This water is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Sources for category three, "black water," include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

  • May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
  • Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

Water Damage: What To Do

4/24/2020 (Permalink)

WATER DAMAGE FROM CLEAN WATER

Do:

  • Shut off the source of water if possible or contact a qualified party to stop the water source.
  • Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the building, when access to the power distribution panel is sage from electrical shock.
  • Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting.
  • Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removing lamps and tabletop items.
  • Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions for even drying.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  • Remove to a safe, dry place any paintings, art objects, computers, documents and other materials that are valuable or sensitive to moisture.
  • Use wooden clothespins to keep furniture skirting off damp floors.
  • Hang draperies with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet carpeting or floors.
  • Hang furs and leather goods to dry separately at room temperature

WATER DAMAGE FROM CONTAMINATED WATER

Don't:

  • Avoid all contact with sewage and items contaminated by sewage.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after contact with contaminated items.

Ceiling Collapse at vacant commercial building

12/14/2017 (Permalink)

Collapsed Ceiling

At SERVPRO of Indian Wells we assist with water damage work on a daily basis. Sometimes this work is located at vacant commercial properties, this type of property can present challenging work. If the property does not receive routine inspections or proper maintenance then it can incur major repair issues that far out-way the normal cost of ownership.

In this picture we see a property that has been affected by a break-in where the thieves stole copper piping and fixtures. Not only did the owner lack a security system to monitor for such events, the lack of an alert allowed the damage to progress. The result of this theft was that the ceiling collapsed from over-saturation and the repair bill also increased. Add to this scenario the fact the insurance company can view the nature of this damage as negligent or owner absenteeism.

Make sure to inspect and protect your property, otherwise you can find your insurance unwilling to cover losses.

Floating Carpet?

Carpet being Floated

At SERVPRO of Indian Wells we like to showcase some of the many process we use to restore items rather than replace them. The key to helping both the client and the Insurance Company are providing great service and keeping cost low. One of the ways we reduce cost is to restore rather than replace.

In this picture we see a section of carpet being 'floated', floating is when an air mover is used to push air underneath a carpet to aid in drying it after a water damage. This is not an option in every scenario, but if the water is category 1, and does not contain any potential health concerns then we can dry it in place. This saves the carpet from having to be replaced which can be very costly.

Carpeting Concerns

12/8/2017 (Permalink)

Water Damaged Carpet

At SERVPRO of Indian Wells our everyday duties consist of evaluating what can be saved or restored after the damage has occurred. When you are exposed to as many of these situations as we are you have to understand the limits of your ability. You don’t want to over promise the customer and you want to minimize the cost of the claim.

In this picture we see carpeting that has been delaminated by a water damage, it is non salvageable. The backing on most carpeting is secured by glue that is water based, when this glue comes into contact with water for enough time it separates. If this separation occurs then the carpet loses its ability to stretch when it is being reattached and cannot be reinstalled.

This is another of the concerns that a client should have on prolonging the response time and starting mitigation on a water damage.

Slab Leak in the night

9/27/2016 (Permalink)

We found the Leak

At SERVPRO of Palm Springs and SERVPRO of Indian Wells we are here to help with any size disaster.

In this photo we see a shot of a slab leak that has affected the interior of the residence.

The loss was actually discovered in the middle of the night. The homeowner moved to get out of bed and was greeted with sevral inches of warm water.

When a slab leak occurs it usually perks up through the concrete and spreads out into the home. If the volume of water and time are left unchecked you can awake to a similar situation.

Slab removals are also frustrating in that they require a re-flood of the site. The resaon behind thr re-flood is to locate the souce of the loss. The pipes in the slab are pressurized with water and then the air leaks out where the break in the line is...Along with any remaining water in the lines.

Luckily we are onsite and ready to etract as soon as it perks up.
